Myriah McMahan While attending Penn State University, I was President of the Landscape Architecture Student Society. With the assistance of the Board and Committees, we were able to implement several outreach programs that proved successful in recruiting and strengthening the involvement of members. Since graduation, living in Atlantic City and working at Forrest Associates Ltd has shaped my role as a professional and a member of the community. I am presently Advisory Council Chairperson of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Urban Outreach Center and Coordinator for the Beron JOAS Senior Center walking program. Additionally, I am a member of the NJASLA Annual Meeting Committee. As a new committee person, it is satisfying to collaborate with those who are responsible for many successful conferences and to have the opportunity to bring new ideas to the group. In addition to the general responsibilities, I have organized a multi-agency team that will work together to implement a recycling program at the 2005 Annual Meeting and set a precedent for casino convention recycling efforts. It is my initiative to bring new ideas like this to the NJASLA and to take an active role in the development of this successful organization. Karen Twisler My previous volunteer work includes writing newsletters for a small-town organization looking to improve the aesthetics of their main street, and I also have previous vocational experience in print layout, proposal writing, and general proofreading, which should be useful skills for our organization. Like any good LA, I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. (Of course, a good sense of humor helps too.) I believe that my experiences and my goal-oriented attitude can help energize our chapter. Please vote for me for Treasurer. Business Registration Statute Enacted All businesses transacting business in New Jersey are already required under various laws to have registered with the State (for example, the corporate registration laws for incorporated business, the gross income tax for unincorporated businesses, the sales and use tax law for businesses dealing in tangible property and taxable services, and the labor laws for businesses with employees) and these functions have been consolidated in a single registration process. This new statute formalizes some of the procedures. Under the statute a contractor or subcontractor will provide a copy of its business registration in response to a request for bids, at the time a bid proposal is submitted, or before the issuance of a purchase order or other contracting document. The statute provides for extensive notice to contractors and subcontractors of the requirements to provide a copy of the business registration through documents notifying potential contractors of opportunities. The statute extends the program beyond business registration for providers of goods and services to State agencies and casinos to include contractors and subcontractors with State colleges and universities, county colleges, local government units, boards of education, and certain municipal water and wastewater contractors. The statute adds a copy of a contractor's or subcontractor's business registration to the documents that are mandatory items submitted under the "Local Public Contracts Law." The statute provides an additional exception to the confidentiality of State tax information so that the Director of the Division of Taxation may verify whether a contractor or subcontractor holds a valid State business registration. The statute also adds a new requirement for entry into a contract with a State agency, State colleges and universities, county colleges, local government units, boards of education, and certain municipal water and wastewater contractors. The contractor or subcontractor, and any affiliate of the subcontractor or subcontractor, must collect New Jersey use tax on any sales of goods delivered into the State. The statute also repeals a law the makes failure to properly provide a business registration under a State contract a crime, and replaces that criminal law provision with a $25 per day administrative penalty for a contractor's or subcontractor's failure to properly provide a business registration under the contractor business registration program or the casino service provider registration provision. This new statute does not replace the existing statute known as “The Public Works Contractor Registration Act.” The requirements of that statute still exist and must continue to be fulfilled. Upcoming Seminar for Landscape Professionals January 11 & 12, 2005 at Villanova University, Villanova, PA. Continuing Education Units for landscape architects will be available. Like parallel lines that never meet, landscape architects, designers, horticulturists, restoration ecologists and agriculturists all deal with the land and plants but seldom interact. Whether collaborating in the field or sharing ideas in a seminar, each specialty has much to offer its related professions. This year’s seminar will explore historic and contemporary techniques from the various related disciplines that have relevance for people designing today’s landscapes. For a complete brochure, call the Morris Arboretum at 215-247-5777, ext. 156 or 125. Co-sponsored by the Morris Arboretum and New Directions in the American Landscape “Very informative and a
great place to get together with like-minded people.” Help Wanted |
